Southern Vectis
Farewell VR

On Saturday 29th January 2000 a tour was organised to say farewell to the Bristol VRT’s that served the Isle of Wight with Southern Vectis.

This video follows 685 (DPX685W) on that day completing a tour of the island. We call at Ryde, Ventnor, Yarmouth and Newport and see 685 in a number of locations where the VR’s ran.

SVOC operated 68 new, and 13 secondhand VR’s from 1969 onwards, a number of them can be seen in the ‘Photo Gallery’ on this programme.  The first VR, 622 (NDL490G) is seen being restored from a treelopper at Ryde depot.  For added interest we take a quick spin on RELL6G 863 (TDL563K), still in service with SVOC, also at Ryde.  Look out for preserved Bristol FS6G TDL998 making a brief appearance at Yarmouth.  3 former SVOC VR’s are filmed in action with SOLENT BLUE LINE.  It’s not quite farewell to the VR, because 681 is converted to open-top to run along former stable-mates with the newly formed ‘VILLAGE BUS CO’.

Thanks must go to Richard Newman for driving on the day. Also other members of the IOW Bus Museum that helped to produce this video, commemorating over 30 years of VR service on the Isle of Wight.
