Tramlink

Wednesday 10th May, 2000 was the first day of operation of Tramlink carrying the general public.  Farepaying passengers were carried from the following day on the first section - route 3 from Addington to Croydon.

This video was shot during the first month of opening of the whole network, and features a number of 'first' public duties for the trams.  We join the tram at Sandilands on 10th May, which was for invited guests, following behind the two official trams that carried various officials and local dignitaries.  They had cut the tape a little earlier at Addington.  We follow route 3 into and around Croydon and then over the hills to Addington.
Extensive footage shows various trams around Croydon on this first day of service.  We also witness the bus operations in Croydon, of which some of the routes will eventually be replaced by the trams.

There are scenes of the other opening ceremony for route 2 at Beckenham Junction on Tuesday 23rd May and a week later the official's tram travelling through Merton Park on the first day of service on the Wimbledon route - 1. We continue with tram activity across the system at various locations, with plenty of action between Reeves Corner and Sandilands where there is street running.  Again, a further study of the bus operations mainly, in East Croydon, where we see trams and buses running together.

Also featured are some of the buses that operate the feeder routes, T31, T32 and T33, into Addington Village interchange.

A fascinating programme for any one interested in the modern transport scene and indeed those who can recall the original trams that stopped running in 1952!
