The Last Southampton Atlantean Day
On our second trip to Southampton, independent transport videos document the last day of Leyland Atlantean operation in the city.
Synonymous with Southampton, the Atlantean first entered service in 1968 and in 2005 they were finally retired from service after an honourable 37 years of operation.
The day starts at Mayflower Park where farewell celebrations were centred. Here we see a range of former Southampton City Transport vehicles ranging from Guy Arabs, A.E.C. Regents and examples of Atlanteans, as well as other vehicles from companies associated with the Southampton area.
We sample a ride on the ‘last’ Atlantean in service. 270 (FTR 270X) as it operates the 8/8A service to Lordshill a route familiar to the type. Our cameras record the activities at Vincents Walk where most of the services operate from, giving interesting comparisons with the old and new order.
We travel on board preserved
Atlantean 252 (YRV 252V), returned to her traditional colours and sporting
a celebratory advert and capture many elements of riding on an Atlantean
upstairs and downstairs.
After arriving at Mayflower Park the vehicles prepare to go on parade through the city back to Portswood depot.
So, our final ride is documented to the full. We use two cameras one on board 252 the other on 270, the vehicle that performed the last ever Atlantean service in Southampton. From Vincents Walk we enjoy a ride on the last Atlantean to Lordshill. We also view the journey from 252 as 270 roars its way through the city streets on a damp murky February evening. From Lordshill 270 journeys back towards Portswood carrying enthusiasts for a final photo shoot. An atmospheric end to the day sees a line up of Atlanteans posing for the camera.
We complete this programme with a visit to the ‘Gosport 800’ celebrations where we sample a ride on numerically the last Atlantean 276 (KOW 276Y) that paid a visit to the rally from Southampton. A fitting end to a video celebrating these superb vehicles.
