Macau's Buses
Macau is a former Portuguese territory, which returned to the Chinese in 1999. It still retains a lot of European influence in the buildings and street names. Situated on the southern coastline of China, this peninsula is attached to the province of Guangdong. There are three islands, all linked by bridges that sweep over the South China Sea. Macau is the largest, Taipa, a quieter, more traditional island and Coloane which is mainly rural, but joined to Taipa with reclaimed land. For the bus enthusiast it still holds a good deal of interest, especially for those that follow British types operating overseas.
There are two main bus companies, TRANSMAC and TCM. Both are well turned out and operate comprehensive routes all over the province. In the mid 1950’s Bristols were introduced to Macau, all sourced from English Tilling companies Some of these still ran well up to the end of the 1980’s.
1995 saw the arrival of further ‘British types’ in the shape of Dennis Darts with Plaxton bodywork. The newest vehicles with TRANSMAC are Dennis Darts with Soon Chow bodywork made in China which resembles very closely Marshall’s final product in the U.K.
This video programme takes you on a tour of Taipa and Macau. We make no apology for using some of Malcolm King’s excellent cine footage again. Shot in 1984, we go back to some of Malcolm’s locations and you can judge for yourself how the background and the buses have changed. We visit the busy area at ‘Barrier Gate’ and the Ferry Terminal to see both fleets going about their daily business. The hustle and bustle of the ‘Centro’ and Inner Harbour areas as well as the relative calm of Taipa Village. So join in with the sights and sounds of this fascinating area for buses in the Far East, and remember, the sounds you hear on the cine are authentic as Malcolm used a sound cine camera.
