King Alfred Running Day 2018
The 2018 early May
Bank Holiday yet again brought out the crowds and the King Alfred buses onto
the streets of Winchester for another enjoyable Running Day organised by the
‘Friends of King Alfred Buses’ (FoKAB).
As usual the independent transport videos cameras were on
hand, bright and early, to record the action of the day for you to enjoy! Our filming starts on The Broadway as the
buses begin their duties. This year the
remodelled bus station was not in use for the event. King Alfred buses still used The Broadway as
usual, but the country bus services departed from St George’s Street outside the
M&S store, or from the Cattle Market near to the railway station where
there was a good display of preserved buses.
A number of filming locations are used on this programme that include
The Broadway, St George’s Street, Jewry Street, Andover Road, City Road and the
Cattle Market. This ensures that you will see a good deal of action as the
buses run in service bringing alive days gone by in this picturesque Hampshire
city. To add even more enjoyment to this
DVD we have put a camera into the cab of two lovely preserved
double-deckers. The first is 547 (PUF
647), a Guy Arab IV with Park Royal bodywork, built in 1956 that began life
with Southdown Motor Services. We see
the driver in action as we travel from the Cattle Market through the city to
the St Catherine's Park & Ride site and then back via The Broadway. We even get the passengers’ view as we travel
on this very tuneful bus! The second
‘cab ride’ is onboard a classic King Alfred bus, 596 LCG, an AEC Renown 3B2RA
also with a Park Royal body, but dating from 1964. We join the driver for the long ride out to
Sutton Scotney, taking us through the quiet roads and lanes in glorious
sunshine giving you the impression that you could be travelling back in the 1960s.
We also get the passengers’ perspective
as we travel along. At Sutton Scotney we
meet up with the Southdown Guy for passengers to connect to if they wish to
travel back a different way.
Our cameras
also travel onboard JAA 708, the Leyland Olympic HR40 with MCW bodywork dating
from 1950 showing you the vast variety of buses on show and in service at this
very enjoyable event. A big thank you to
the organisers and drivers and we hope that you enjoy this great reminder of
the day.
