Victoria Coach Station 90

In 2022 London’s iconic Victoria Coach Station celebrated 90 years of continuous operation.  The independent transport videos cameras were on hand to capture the celebratory event organised by the Thames Valley & Great Western Omnibus Trust, the London Bus Museum, London Transport Museum, FlixBus and Victoria Coach Station.  The ‘VCS Bus & Coach Running Day’ took place on Sunday 24th July 2022.  It featured preserved coaches and one brand new Flixbus vehicle operating a free service (Route 090) from Victoria Coach Station (VCS) to Hammersmith bus station, running along the Embankment and through Earls Court.  Also operated was a shortened ‘Airbus’ route A1 limited stop service from VCS via Hyde Park Corner, Knightsbridge and Cromwell Road also to Hammersmith bus station, using a selection of preserved Metrobuses, Leyland Titans and an Optare Spectra.  The third route was London Transport route 11, serving the stops between VCS and Aldwych, using the iconic RT and RM buses as well as a ‘modern’ Wrights-bodied Volvo.

We start this DVD programme with video shot in June 2022 featuring views of the modern coaches, mostly made up of either Volvo B11R or Scania K410/K440 chassis with Caetano Levante, Levante 2 or Levante 3 bodywork in National Express white livery.  We also see coaches in Megabus blue and yellow livery as well as ‘Flixbus’ in their bright green livery.  Several independent operators are also seen.  We film our arrival at VCS, then action in Buckingham Palace Road and Semley Place.

The second part of our programme is of The VCS Bus & Coach Running Day.  On the day of the celebrations we begin our filming early in the morning at locations around the Coach Station, these being Elizabeth Street, Buckingham Palace Road and Semley Place.  Our cameras then take a ride to Aldwych on AEC Regent III, RT4779 (OLD 566), with a Weymann H56R body on route 11.  We film some of the action at Aldwych of the preserved buses running amongst the modern traffic and buses before returning to VCS on board RM1941 (ALD 941B), an AEC Routemaster on route 11.  With more filming completed on Buckingham Palace Road we join 1286 (MOD 973), a Bristol LS6G with an ECW C41F body in Royal Blue livery for a journey on the 090 route to Hammersmith.  We film some of the action at Hammersmith bus station and then board 1250 (LTA 729), a Bristol LL6B with a Duple C37F body, also in Royal Blue livery for a luxurious ride back to the VCS Arrivals Terminal in Eccleston Place.  With more filming completed in Elizabeth Street we have our last ride of the day.  This time onboard former Reading Buses 701 (J257 NLU), an Optare Spectra bodied DAF DB250 on the A1 route to Hammersmith.  On arrival back at VCS there is just enough time to film the 17.00 ‘mass-departure’ of modem day National Express coaches as well as a superbly restored Bristol LS Royal Blue coach.  We hope you enjoy the celebrations and rides!
