During May 2022 the independent
transport videos cameras visited the East Midlands to record the bus
scene at that time. We visited
Leicester, Derby, Burton upon Trent and Lichfield. There are a wealth of buses in the area that
are operated by a good number of bus companies offering a wide selection of
vehicle types and colourful liveries. We
begin our programme in LEICESTER. Our filming locations are in Charles Street,
the Haymarket Bus Station and Humberstone Gate all within the city centre. The two main bus operators are First Midlands
with ‘Leicester’ fleetnames and Arriva Midlands. Other operators seen on this programme are
Centrebus and Stagecoach. The new
electric Yutong single-deckers seen on the Leicester Park & Ride service
are operated by Roberts Travel Group, known for their smart coach fleet, on
behalf of Leicester City Council under the umbrella of the Leicester Bus
Partnership. There are many liveries to
be seen - First have their smart ‘Saffron’, ‘Frequent Fourteens’ and
‘Braunstonebus’ brands together with the current corporate livery with fuchsia
fronts. Arriva buses can be seen in a variety of older and current schemes and
brands. There are also a wide variety of
vehicle types to be seen. First have
Wrightbus Streetdeck and Streetlite DF buses as well as older ADL
vehicles. Arriva have double-deck Volvos
with Wrightbus and East Lancs Olympus bodies, as well as ADL products and
more. Just see for yourself!
We now move onto DERBY. Our locations in the
city are along Morledge and the very busy bus station as well as Corporation
Street and Derwent Street. The two main
operators here are Arriva and Trent Barton.
The latter is part of the Wellglade Group that also operates the Notts
& Derby buses that are seen in this programme. Independent operator Littles of Ilkeston have
a former ‘morebus’ of Poole Volvo B7RLE, HF54 HGL, with a Wright Eclipse Urban
body that is seen operating in this programme.
A variety of liveries and brands are present on the Trent Barton buses,
whereas the standard Arriva schemes are seen on their buses as in Leicester.
Trent Barton operates an all single-decker fleet with a good variety of vehicle
types including many ADL 200MMCs. Arriva
operate a number of Volvo/Wrightbus double-deckers and a large fleet of Scania
CN230UB OmniCity single-deckers. Look
out for another Scania OmniCity operated by High Peak Buses on their service to
Buxton. This company is jointly owned by
Wellglade and Centrebus. BURTON upon Trent is our next port of
call. At the time of our visit in May
2022 the main operator was Midland Classic.
An independent operator that had connections with the erstwhile
Stevenson’s of Uttoxeter Bus Company. In
August 2022 the company was bought by Rotala Plc, trading as Diamond Bus, and
renamed Diamond Bus (East Midlands).
Their smart yellow and red livery and name has now been replaced by
Diamond Bus’s corporate scheme. We see
the fleet at that time in action with a superb variety of buses turned out in
immaculate condition. Interesting
vehicles to note are the Scania/Irizar i3 single-deckers, 85 (TFA 13), a Wright
Eclipse Urban in Stevenson's heritage livery and former London double-deckers
in the shape of an ADL400, Volvo B7TL Plaxton President and former Reading
Buses Scania OmniCity double–decker YN08 MKP.
Our final visit is to LICHFIELD. Here we film at the town’s bus station and
see buses from Arriva, Midland Classic, Select Bus of Penkridge, D&G
Chaserider as well as National Express West Midlands.
