North East Buses Preserved
In May 2022 the independent
transport videos cameras made a visit to the North East of England to
film two events featuring preserved buses of which nearly all had originated
from fleets in northern England.
The
first event, organised by the Aycliffe & District Bus Preservation Society
was held in Darlington on Saturday 14th
May. A small event that featured two former
Darlington Corporation Daimler CCG5 double-deckers, a former
Middlesbrough
Corporation Dennis Loline and a former United Automobile Bristol LS6B
ECW-bodied
coach. The event was centred on the town
square that also featured food, drink and loud music! We film the
buses running in service along
the streets in amongst the contemporary Arriva North East buses.
Our cameras take a ride on a tuneful
Darlington Corporation Daimler CCG5, 7 (AHN 451B) with a Roe H61R
body. Our next ride is onboard former Middlesbrough
Corporation 99 (JDC 599), a Dennis Loline 1 with a Northern Counties
body
seating 67 passengers. The third and
final ride was on the former United Auto Bristol LS6B with ECW C39F
bodywork. This coach has been expertly restored and one
could imagine the luxury of travelling the long distance from Newcastle
to
London on it back in the day.
The next event
on this programme was organised by the North East Bus Preservation Trust Ltd
and took place on Sunday 15th May.
Based at the Metrocentre in Gateshead and titled ‘The North East Bus
& Coach Show’, the event tied in with an open day at the nearby Go North
East Riverside bus depot – an event we feature in our ‘North East Buses 2022’
DVD programme. The NEB&C Show is a
big event and also featured buses and coaches from local contemporary operators
such as Arriva North East, Go North East, Stagecoach and local independent bus
and coach operators. Of course preserved
buses and coaches are the main stars of the show. Some of the fleets and liveries you see
include Middlesbrough Corporation, Cleveland Transit, Northumbria, London
Transport, Venture, and Northern General in both NBC and Deregulation
liveries. Also featured are Tyne &
Wear PTE and the later Busways liveries from surrounding towns, United
Automobile, Cumberland, West Yorkshire, Sunderland Corporation and from
Scotland, Strathtay. Many bus types are
represented, too many to mention here – you will have to watch the DVD!
Our cameras also take
four rides, the first one being onboard 2099 (PCN 762 – formally RCN 699), a
1964 AEC Routemaster from the Northern General fleet and owned by Go North East,
for a trip to their Riverside depot. We
return to the Metrocentre Bus & Coach Show on Go North East’s 6998 (794
EYD), a Plaxton President open-top bodied DAF DB250 smartly painted in the
‘Toon Tour’ livery. Our next ride is a
trip to Newcastle city centre onboard preserved, 1995 built, Volvo Olympian,
223 (M223 SVN), which has a Northern Counties Palatine body and is in the green,
white and yellow livery of Transit at the time when Stagecoach had just taken
over. Our final ride at the event is on
an Alexander-bodied Leyland Atlantean AN68 in the livery of South Shields
Busways, also for a ride to Newcastle and return. There is plenty of action to see as our
cameras film all the vehicles departing for home after a very successful
day.
