Broad Street in Barry
is home to ‘The Bus Depot’ where the Cardiff Transport Preservation Group
(CTPG) is based in this former Western Welsh bus depot. The small town of Barry
in south Wales sits alongside its well-known coastal neighbour Barry Island. In
June each year the CTPG is involved with the ‘Festival of Transport’ when ‘The
Bus Depot’ is open to the public and there is also a large display of buses at
‘The Show Ground’ at Barry Island together with a display of classic and
performance cars along the promenade.
Both sites are connected with a regular bus service using heritage buses
and coaches. The Group care for some 90
vehicles of which most have a connection to south Wales, especially
Cardiff.
The independent transport
videos cameras attended the events in 2022 and 2023 featuring the buses
and coaches and our DVD is still available covering these events. Our cameras have returned in 2025 to film
this lovely event at ‘The Bus Depot’ where the action begins. We take rides on three different buses for
visits to the Show Ground. First is on
board former Rhymney Valley District Council 16 (YBO 16T), a Leyland Leopard
PSU3E/2R with East Lancs B51F bodywork built in 1979 for a busy ride to the Show
Ground at Barry Island. Following a brief look around we board 190 (NHB 190M),
a Bristol RESL6G with an ECW B47F body formally in the fleet of Merthyr Tydfil
Borough Council dating from 1973 for a ride back to ‘The Bus Depot’ in Broad
Street. Here we film some arrivals and
departures in the street and on Gladstone Bridge. Now it is time for a real treat! A ride on the very last double-decker to be
built to low-height specification featuring an offside sunken gangway. Former Bedwas and Machen Urban District
Council, fleet number 6 (PAX 466F), a Leyland Titan PD3/4 with a Massey L68RD
body dating from 1968 for a ride to the Show Ground. We have placed a camera on the front bulkhead
window to capture the sights and sounds of this superbly restored bus. We also have a camera in the lower saloon
capturing the passengers’ experience. At
Barry Island we get a different view of the buses on display as the bus turns
around for our journey back to ‘The Bus Depot’.
To conclude our visit our
cameras return to Barry Island to film the buses leaving the showground and
running along Station Approach Road. Our
final scenes of the day are at the showground where we see Edwards Coaches, who
celebrated 100 years in 2025, recently acquired 1931 Maudslay ML3 with a 1948
Thurgood coach body and painted cream and red to represent the early livery of
Edwards Bros of Beddau. We then look
back to 2015 when our cameras were invited to see and film the CTPG’s superb
restoration of former Islwyn Borough Transport 41 (C41 GKG), a 1985 Leyland
Tiger TRBTL11/2RP with an East Lancs DP47F body. We take it out for a short ride and a
photo-shoot. We hope that you enjoy our
visit to this south Wales transport event.
