METROBUS was
established in 1983 and has an interesting back history that brings it to the
current incarnation as a respected company that is part of the Go Ahead group
and has been managed by Brighton & Hove since 2013. The independent transport videos cameras
visited the operator’s open day on Saturday 6th September 2025 to
bring you this DVD programme. Before
visiting the depot our cameras filmed at Crawley’s busy bus station in the town
centre. Here we see the contemporary
fleet in action comprising of Wrightbus Gemini Volvo B9TLs, Wrightbus
StreetLites, Wrightbus GB Kite Hydroliner single-deckers and Wrightbus
Hydroliner double-deckers, Alexander Dennis Enviro 200 and 200MMC
single-deckers as well as Scania OmniCity double-deckers to name but a few.
The ‘Crawley Depot Open Day’ was a super
event aimed at families and of course the bus enthusiast. A good line-up of the current Metrobus fleet
and a number of preserved buses were displayed as well as hot dogs, ice cream
and loud music that accompanied the event!
One of the highlights we filmed was a ride on 6065 (LV23 EEO), a
forty-seat Wrightbus GB Kite Hydroliner built in 2023 for a brief tour of the
‘Fastway’ system. We got an informative
commentary as the bus sped along the guided busway and through the middle of
roundabouts with the bus having priority over other vehicles on the road. Back at the depot we were treated to a depot
tour, giving a ‘behind the scenes’ look at a busy modern day bus depot. A visit to the hydrogen refuelling area was
included with a representative from ‘Air Products’, the company that supplies
the hydrogen fuel, explaining how the buses are refuelled. After leaving the depot we returned to the
town’s bus station to film more action for you to enjoy.
Unfortunately on 2nd December
2025, Wrighbus GB Kite Hydroliner 6069 (LV23 EYB) was totally destroyed by fire
whilst in service. Following this the
entire fleet of GB Kites was withdrawn from service for investigations into the
cause of the fire. In order for bus
services to continue a number of buses were loaned from other operators and
fellow Go Ahead companies, so our cameras returned to Crawley later in December
and again in February 2026 to film the variety of buses drafted in. This included buses from Chaseside, Go-Coach,
South East Omnibus, and Compass Travel.
From Go Ahead there were buses from Go Ahead London, Go South Coast,
East Yorkshire, Oxford and Brighton & Hove.
Go South Coast buses included ones from Bluestar, Damory and Swindon
Buses. Look out for Bluestar’s 6901 and
6913, these Wrighbus Volvo B7TLs began life in London before being transferred
to Go North East. They then moved to operate
in Southampton when Firstbus pulled out of the city, then moved to Damory to be
used on the Portland Port cruise-liner shuttle services as well as regular
service work. Now they are back on
front-line work not too far from London!
Our filming in December and February takes place at Crawley bus station
and the busy bus station at Redhill.
Enjoy the variety!
