Buses in Bristol, Bath & Weston 2024 & 2025
You will notice when you watch this DVD programme that most of the buses seen are in a variety of different colours! Fleet liveries and route branding are all mixed up offering a cornucopia of interest to the bus enthusiast in the west of England. If you mention the city of Bristol, or Bristol Omnibus to any British bus enthusiast, images of L and K types, Lodekkas, LS, MW, RE or VR buses and coaches will come to mind. In the second decade of the 21st century these types have now passed into the history books, but thankfully they can still be enjoyed at various bus events and museums across the country. That being so, there is still plenty of bus interest on the streets of Bristol, Bath and Weston-super-Mare as we see from the many inter-fleet transfers and the introduction of battery-electric buses. The main operator in this area is First Cymru and West of England that through various takeovers and mergers, operate in what was the mainstay area of Bristol Omnibus.
This DVD programme begins in Bath during a visit in 2024. Our filming locations included Manvers Street, Broad Quay, the Bus Station, Dorchester Street and St James’s Parade. There are a great variety of buses and liveries to see that includes Wright-bodied single-deckers transferred in from Worcester in their ‘Salt Road’ green livery, buses from south Wales and Essex, not to mention a good number of double-deckers in the ‘Mendip Explorer’ livery with some operating on city services. Also a number of double-deckers transferred in from Bristol city routes. We also see independent ‘Faresaver’ buses in service alongside ‘TooT Bus’ sightseeing open-toppers.
Our next major location is Weston-super-Mare when our independent transport videos cameras visited there in spring 2025. Locations included Locking Road, Oxford Street and Walliscote Road. Here we film the brand new Yutong U11DD 70-seat battery-electric double-deckers in the new all over light green livery of the ‘West of England Mayoral Combined Authority’ – displaying ‘West Bus’ fleet names. This livery will soon replace all the liveries of the buses operating within the greater Bristol area in due course. One livery that was revived for buses in Weston was that of Badgerline. We see a good number of Wrightbus StreetDecks and StreetLites in this smart yellow and green livery. Since our filming some of the Wright StreetDeck buses have left the fleet to be converted to battery-electric operation by ‘NewPower’. On returning to service these buses are re-registered and have been transferred to other Firstbus fleets around the UK.
We now turn our attention to Bristol. Our cameras visited Bristol on three occasions during 2025 to record the ever-changing bus scene. Filming locations included Wine Street, Baldwin Street, Broad Quay, The Centre, Colson Avenue, Rupert Street, The Haymarket, Whitson Street, the Bus & Coach Station, Park Street and Temple Meads station before completing our filming at The Mall bus station at Cribbs Causeway. Here we see a good variety of buses operating, many in branded route liveries and of course the ‘Metrobus’ routes in their mostly grey, with different coloured trim, liveries. These Scania N280UD CNG ADL Enviro400City buses were obtained from Bristol Community Transport in 2022 and are now operated by Firstbus. At Cribbs Causeway we see Newport Bus battery-electric Traws Cymru Yutong E12 single-deckers operating the T7 route that runs between Chepstow and Bristol.
