Bus Rides on the Isle of Wight

We continue our series of videos featuring the buses on the Isle of Wight with this programme – Bus Rides on the Isle of Wight.  Our journey starts at one of the ever popular ‘Running Days’, this time October 2002.  We see vehicles arriving on Newport Quay, home to the Isle of Wight Bus Museum.  Vehicles from most parts of the country attend both preserved from a bygone era to present day buses currently in revenue earning service.  We feature a ride on a recently delivered Volvo B7TL contrasting nicely with the old order of Bristol Lodekka’s K’s and MW’s native to the island as well as visiting Routemasters and a whole host of other types.

We then move forward to July 2003 with an update of the present Southern Vectics operations.  We call at all the main bus centres on the island such as Ryde, Newport, Shanklin, not forgetting the picturesque Alum Bay and Yarmouth.  All types are recorded including vehicles in ‘Route Rouge’ and ‘Explorer’ liveries as well as Westbrook Travel and a guest appearance of 702 (CDL 899), the 1939 Bristol K5G.

Moving onto April 2004 we ride on the newly converted to open top Leyland Olympian 743 (K743 ODL) from Alum Bay to the Old Needles Battery.  Spectacular scenery is witnessed as we ascend the switchback road to the top.  There is some spectacular footage of 743 and 742 her sister in action.

Finishing the programme we attend the April 2004 Running Day at the Bus Museum.  Again featuring some absolute gems in action on ‘The Quay’.  We take a ride out on a former Southern Vectis (now preserved in Solent Blue Line livery) Bristol VRT series 2 to Haven Street station to see a steam train leave.  Two further rides are taken on the preserved ex.Crosville Bristol L5G (KFM 767), a type once familiar to the island’s roads.  Pure nostalgia!
