The independent
transport videos cameras attended the 2025 and 2026 East Grinstead
Classic Bus Running Day organised by ‘Country Bus Rallies – Kent & Sussex
Group’. They put on excellent running day each year during April centred on the
market town of East Grinstead in April.
The events mostly feature former London buses and are centred in the
High Street of East Grinstead in Surrey.
You will see an excellent selection of former green and red London
Transport buses in service with other buses from fleets such as Maidstone &
District, Metrobus, Brighton Hove & District, Southdown and even more! Each event features quite a few different
vehicles. For example some of the green
London Transport/London Country buses seen at the 2025 event included RF, RT,
RML, RMC and MB types, whilst at the 2026 event some of these were not present
but we also see an RB Green Line coach. Red
London Transport buses seen are RF, RT, RM, RML, DMS, T and LS classes. At both events we see the former Maidstone
& District DL39 (VKR 39), a 1956 low-bridge AEC Regent V and DH478 (VKR
470), a 1956 high-bridge AEC Regent V.
It is also good to see some ‘modern’ buses in the shape of Dennis Darts
and ALX400 double-deckers that are now joining the ranks of preserved
buses!
Our programme opens at the 2025
event on London Road, East Grinstead before moving to the High Street where all
the action takes place. We take a ride
out to Dormansland on route 428 in RF600 (NLE 600), a 1951 AEC Regal IV with
MCW B39F bodywork. On returning to the High Street we then join RT604 (HLX 421),
a 1948 AEC Regent III with a Weymann H56R body for a spirited ride to The Green
at Godstone on the 409 route then returning back to East Grinstead High Street.
A good deal of filming takes place at various points along the busy High Street
capturing all the attending vehicles. The weather was perfect for both events,
which made the days even more enjoyable!
The 2026 filming again begins along London Road as we see the buses
arriving and the first journeys setting off for the day. Our next location is the High Street where we
see a good selection of mostly green London Transport/London Country buses in
attendance. Our first ride of the day is
taken on the superbly restored XF3 (CUV 53C), the 1965 Daimler Fleetline CRG6LX
with a seventy-two seat Park Royal body in the Lincoln green livery of the
country fleet of London Transport. This
bus operated for most of its working life at East Grinstead and at one point
was fitted with a Cummins V6-200 9.6 litre engine. The engine cover had to be extended to
accommodate the Cummins unit and the bus still carries the extended cover
today. We travel on route 424 to Crawley
Down and back to the High Street. Our
second ride of the day is on board red RM1699 (699 DYE), a 1963 AEC Routemaster
with a Park Royal H64R body for the 409 route to Forest Row and return. The final ride is on RF633 (NLE 633), a 1953
AEC Regal IV with an MCW B39F body for the 434 route to Dormansland and return
to the High Street where we film the action as the day draws to a close. Again we see all of the attending buses and
coaches in action with our final filming taking place along London Road ending
a programme of sheer nostalgia that we are sure you will enjoy.
