The last time the independent
transport videos cameras visited Brighton was to film the twilight days
of the Mercedes Benz articulated ‘Bendy’ buses.
This was back in 2022 and since then several changes have taken
place. The most noticeable is the
introduction of a new fleet livery. This
livery is removing the famous red and cream colours long associated with the city
to a new look livery, with colours first seen on their ‘battery-electric’
Enviro400MMC ER double-deckers in 2020 which can be seen in full on our
previous ‘Brighton & Hove Buses 2020’ DVD programme. The colours are a two-tone teal scheme with
colourful decals around the rear wheel area of the bus. Also new is the revised ‘Coaster’ livery of
green, blue and white on the brand new, in 2024, Enviro400MMC diesel double-deckers
for the variety of frequent routes along the coast to Eastbourne.
This DVD programme was filmed during two
visits to Brighton, the first in June 2024 and the other in March 2025. There are not just the buses from Go Ahead’s
Brighton & Hove fleet, but also Metrobus, whose operations in Crawley are
now managed by Brighton & Hove. We
see Stagecoach buses mostly operating the busy 700 Coastliner service and
independents ‘Compass’ and ‘The Big Lemon’ which incidentally closed their
Brighton operations not long after we filmed their buses during our 2025
visit. Our 2024 filming begins outside
Brighton railway station with plenty of action for you to enjoy. We then film around the city at the following
locations; Surrey Street, Queens Road, Churchill Square, North Street, Castle
Square, St James Street, Old Steine, Pool Valley and more. Look out for the Stagecoach ADL Enviro400MMC
bus on the short lived 701 service to Eastbourne. Also, the Brighton & Hove Volvo B9TLs
with Wright two-door bodies with London registrations. These buses were brought in to replace the
‘Bendy’ buses and can be seen on our previous programme having just arrived
from London. Before leaving Brighton, we take a short ride on one of the new
‘Coaster’ buses, 728 (YY24 EHT), an ADL Enviro400MMC on a 14C route to Brighton
station.
Our
2025 visit also begins at
the railway station before filming along Queens Road, North Street,
Churchill
Square and at Brighton Marina. From here
we board ‘The Big Lemon’ BIG 949, a Higer Steed EV with a B26F body on
a 52
service to Arundel Road. Here we swap to
BIG 822, a similar vehicle on the 52 service to Old Steine. The
bus then travels on to Patcham. Since filming both these buses
have moved to
the Bristol operation of ‘The Big Lemon’.
More filming takes place at Old Steine, Marlborough Place and Castle
Square. Look out for the Enviro400MMC
double-deckers with ‘SUL’ registrations.
These buses were bought from Sullivan Buses after they pulled out from
operating
their TfL contracts. Also of note is
Brighton & Hove 223 (LX58 CWM), still in London red - it is a very
rare
Volvo B9TL with ADL Enviro400 bodywork. So,
we hope that you enjoy your visit to Brighton to catch up on the
interesting
buses this Sussex seaside city has to offer.
